These old exams are made available as guides to previous exam format and to provide an opportunity for students in Geology & the Environment to test their knowledge prior to taking the actual exam in class. There are five basic things to remember that should help in preparing for exams in this course:

• Exams cover only lecture material, not materials covered only in lab. Particular attention, however, should be given to materials covered BOTH in lecture and in lab; clearly, these are particularly important! Knowledge gained in lab may certainly be applied in lecture examinations when pertinent.
• Students are expected to be responsible for all materials covered in the lectures and the text. Although exams will be based primarily on lecture material, the text provides important supplemental information and background for the rest of the course.
• Exams will cover only materials covered in lecture through the date of the exam; if the class is behind the syllabus schedule, students will not be held responsible for material not yet covered in the course. In the rare event that we are ahead of the syllabus schedule, this material will appear on the exam.
• Material that has not been part of our particular course will not appear on an exam. Courses evolve, and sometimes different subjects may be covered from term to term, and particular caution should be used when using pre-2000 exams as study guides. HOWEVER, one should be sure that unfamiliar material was not covered on a day when one was not in class!
• When studying, it is best to focus attention on major subjects rather than trying to remember individual details: e.g., it is more important to know the fundamental differences between chemical, organic and clastic sedimentary rocks than the distinction between a siltstone and a mudstone. Knowing this latter without knowing the former is an exercise in blind memorization.
