Quaternary Paleoecology Course Description
372s Quaternary
Paleoecology Reconstruction of biological
environments on land for the recent geologic past, based on the fossil remains of
plants and animals preserved in sediments. Emphasis will be on the use of pollen
in reconstructing past vegetation types, but plant macrofossils and other groups
of organisms (e.g., diatoms, insects)
and what they can tell about past environments will be included. Extrapolation of
past climatic parameters from the biological data. Lecture and laboratory.
Normally offered in spring semesters of even-numbered years, but will
require an all-day field trip the first Saturday
of the previous fall semester.
Prerequisites:
Geology 142 (historical geology) and Chemistry 141 (first semester of general
chemistry); either Geology 251 (history of life on Earth) or Biology 271
(introduction to ecology) is also recommended. Four credit hours. MR.
