7#qqqqq }x *q-nGEOLOGY 141 Name: Lab Section: (circle) A (Monday) B (Tuesday) Spring, 2001 Monday, 5 February, 2001 WORLD GEOGRAPHY REVIEW This initial exercise is intended to re-familiarize you with some of the basic geography of the world, particularly with places we'll be mentioning in class. It is a take-home exercise and you are STRONGLY urged to use an atlas or other good reference if you are unsure about the location of any place I've asked you to locate. [Atlases may be found in the Science Division Library in Olin or in the reference area of Miller Library; atlases have indexes that can speed your search for unfamiliar places. BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS ABOUT USING ON-LINE REFERENCES!] This exercise is due NO LATER THAN 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12th; late papers will not be accepted. It may be given directly to me or left in my mailbox in the Department of Geology office (Mudd 209). Please, DO NOT slide it under my door ... papers on the floor get lost, and on one occasion were discarded by a custodian! The exercise will be worth 25 points toward your semester total. NOTE: since this IS a take-home, open-book exercise, 3 points will be deducted for the first major error (e.g., labeling Delaware "Washington, D.C." or leaving a feature unlabeled); no credit will be given at all for the exercise if there is MORE than one significant error of this kind. PLEASE use a fine-tipped pencil or pen and write neatly, so your labels don't overlap and can be easily understood. If the feature or locality is small, write your label in an open area and draw a sharp arrow to the location of that feature. Please remember that it is to your benefit that I understand what you've written and what feature you've identified! The following page contains two outline maps for the exercise, one of the United States and one of the world. You may find it useful to cross each locality off the lists below as you mark its location on the appropriate map. >> This material will appear on each of the exams during the semester. << ON THE MAP OF THE U.S., please locate and properly label: Each of the 48 states in the conterminous U.S. (please label both peninsulas of Michigan) TWO-LETTER POSTAL CODES ARE ACCEPTABLE ONLY IF THEY ARE CORRECT! e.g., I won't accept 'MA' for Maine, MI for Minnesota, or 'AK' for Arkansas! (Be careful not to forget or miss the small states like Delaware and Rhode Island!) Each of the eight bordering Canadian provinces (including Nova Scotia) Each of the 5 Great Lakes Mexico Vancouver Island Sierra Nevada Cascade Range Chesapeake Bay Gulf of Maine Puget Sound Bay of Fundy Long Island Gulf of California Gulf of St. Lawrence Gulf of Mexico Baja California Washington, D.C.
