A native of Hamburg, Germany, Ursula Reidel-Schrewe, is Associate Professor of German and Chair of the German & Russian Department. She did her undergraduate study at the University of Tübingen and received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. She has published a book and several articles in her field of narrative theory and early 20th-century German literature. Since joining Colby's Department of German & Russian in 1989, "Frau Ulla" has directed the JanPlan in Konstanz and a one-semester program in Lübeck, Germany. She teaches German language, literature and culture at all levels. Her Webpage gives more information about her courses.

James McIntyre, Associate Professor of German, received his B. A. in Russian and his M. A. and Ph. D. degrees in German from Michigan State University. His primary areas of interest include language acquisition, cultural studies, and German drama from Goethe to Brecht. He has been a member and chair of the German Test Development Committee for the ATP/SAT II program, and currently serves on the committee which writes the German Advanced Placement exam. "Herr Mac" is also Colby's coordinator and administrator for student scholarships and fellowships such as Watson, Fulbright, Rhodes, and Marshall. Students who are seeking his advice can make an appointment to meet him in his office.

Maria is our Visiting Instructor in German. She received her A.B. from Princeton University and her M.A. from the University of Virginia, where she is currently completing her PhD. Ms. Morrison spent two years studying in Germany at the University of Tübingen and taught for two years at the University of Bonn. Her interests include 19th century literature and culture, expressionism, children's literature and Scottish Country Dancing.

Sophie Moser is our Language Assistant for 2005-2006. She is a student at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich majoring in German Literature and with a minor in English Literature and Economics. This fall she is conducting a 1-credit conversation class. Contact Sophie if you need any help with German or if you just want to practice speaking Deutsch. Courses required for the German Studies Major are taught by Raffael Scheck, Associate Professor of History. He received his Ph.D. in Comparative European History from Brandeis University and a Masters in History and German Studies from the University of Zurich. His research focuses on German right-wing movements before the rise of the Nazis (1914-1933), and he has published works on putschism and right-wing women in the Weimar Republic, Swiss funding for the early Nazi movement, and on the history of childhood. Jennifer Yoder, Assistant Professor of Government and International Studies, joined the Colby faculty in 1996 after receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. The courses she teaches in the German Studies curriculum are based on her expertise in German politics, German unification, postcommunist developments in the Eastern European countries, and transitional justice. Her book, From East Germans to Germans? The New Postcommunist Elites, was published in 1999 by Duke University Press.
