Global Engagement

Colby College Global Village Housing

Mission

The Colby Global Village enables students to live together alongside Colby’s Language Assistants to immerse themselves in foreign language and to promote the awareness and appreciation of different cultures on campus. The Global Village hosts a number of co-curricular events each semester organized by its residents, movie and gastronomy nights, student and faculty presentations, music events, poetry slams, theater performances, recitals, and both formal and informal opportunities for conversation and socializing.

The Global Village is supported by the Dean of the College, the Provost and Dean of Faculty, along with the Departments of East Asian Studies, French and Italian, German and Russian, Spanish, and the Jewish Studies Program. Students of all language ability levels above the first year are encouraged to apply to live in this community to further enhance their knowledge and skills. Fluency is not required, but the willingness to participate in conversation at everyone’s language level is essential. All residents of the Global Village live together and in contiguous rooms to encourage language immersion and cultural engagement.

Process

Students interested in living in the Global Village must submit an application and request a letter of support from a faculty member. Applications will be evaluated by the Dean of Students office as well as the respective language program(s).

Eligibility

Sophomore, junior and senior language (classes of 2022, 2023, and 2024) learners or speakers of the languages taught at Colby are eligible. Students will have completed the second-semester level in their respective language and must have good academic, judicial, and social standing to be eligible. Priority will be given to majors and minors in these languages, but any student interested in being a part of the Global Village is encouraged to apply.

Residency Expectation

Global Village residents are expected to speak their target language with others and have to be willing to actively contribute to the collective academic, cultural, and social learning experiences in their community. Engagement of 20 hours per semester in co-curricular activities is expected.

The languages that will make up the language corridor/floor are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
