Criteria for Student Assistantships in Environmental Studies/Science

One of the most notable areas in the achievement of Colby's Plan for the Sciences is the College-wide increase in numbers of students participating in independent research with their faculty mentors. It is with that success in mind that we asked the Mellon foundation to fund research assistantships enabling students in Environmental Studies/Science to further enhance their education through research participation. The funds allow faculty to hire students for research work with the faculty member either during the academic year or during the summer. It is assumed that academic year positions will be in the neighborhood of 8 hours/week, but the time commitment is somewhat flexible. Summer assistantships will be for a maximum of 11 weeks at 35 hours/week. A short report listing project accomplishments during the student's time of work will be required at the end of the grant period.

Faculty wishing to apply for student research assistantship funds should submit a written request including the following:

  1. An explanation of the research project, showing its relationship to environmental issues.

  2. Detail the work that will be expected of the student. Students should be fully involved in the project, including both data gathering and analysis, and not simply helpers to do filing, photocopying, etc.

  3. Information about who will supervise the student when the faculty member is away from campus (particularly important for summer assistantships).

  4. State the number of hours/week and duration of the assistantship desired.

  5. Explain the qualifications needed by the student. Pay levels (two levels) will depend on this as they do for other assistantships currently funded by the college.

  6. List the benefits the student will gain from the work (experience gained, contacts made, etc.).

Submit the request to Russ Cole, Environmental Studies Program Director and Mellon Grant Administrator. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the Mellon grant steering committee on a competitive basis.
