Recycling at Colby

Colby began its recycling program in 1989. A successful recycling program depends on everyone's contribution.  Please help Colby protect the environment and reduce its ecological footprint by recycling.

STUDENTS: Keep a box in your room for recyclable materials and dump it in your dorm floor's recycling bins when it's full. Each floor should have paper and bottles/cans recycling bins. Please take the time to separate.  Please visit the Buildings link to see a list of recycling station locations (paper, bottles/cans, cardboard) and pictures of selected stations. Contact your HR if one is missing or report a broken station using the Colby Recycling Contact on the left menu bar.

FACULTY and STAFF: Every office should have a trash and small blue paper recycling bin. Please take the time to separate.  Please visit the Buildings link to see the list of recycling station locations (paper, bottles/cans, cardboard) and pictures of selected stations.

Click on the Recyclable Materials link for the dos and don’ts of recycling.

WHY RECYCLE?

WHAT’S IN YOUR TRASH?

·      Help reduce Colby’s environmental footprint

·      According to the US EPA 4.6 lbs of waste are produced per person per day.

·      Landfills are filling up and closing.  Incineration is a poor alternative because it creates air pollution.

·      Every year enough energy is saved by recycling steel to supply L.A. with nearly a decade's worth of electricity.

·      Making one ton of recycled paper uses only 60% of the energy needed to make one ton of virgin paper.

·      Every year Americans throw away nearly 10 million tons of newspaper. If these papers were all recycled, over 150 million trees would be left standing, less than half as much energy would be used, and air pollution from the manufacturing process would be cut by more than 70 percent

·      Every aluminum can that is recycled saves 95% of the energy that it would take to manufacture a new one. Recycling one aluminum can to run a TV for three hours.

·      Saving energy reduces America’s dependence on foreign oil supplies and reduces environmental problems such as climate change and acid rain.
