Facts About Colby More at www.colby.edu/college/about Coeducational and residential, Colby is the 12th-oldest independent liberal arts college in the nation. Academic Programs: More than 50 majors are offered by 25 departments and 11 programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and interdisciplinary studies. Colby works on a 4-1-4 semester program, with the month of January devoted to intensive study. Classes begin around Labor Day and end the second week of May. Alumni: Colby's 22,600 alumni reside in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in three U.S. territories and 75 foreign countries. Budget: The 2001-02 fiscal budget is $88,490,000. Campus: Colby is located on a 714-acre campus in Waterville. Most of the campus is a Maine Wildlife Management Area, including the 128-acre Perkins Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary. The campus consists of 62 buildings.Degree: Bachelor of Arts Employees: The College employs approximately 600 full-time employees in executive, administrative, managerial, technical, support and service staff positions.
Enrollment and Demographics: The student body consists of approximately 1,800 students hailing from nearly every state and representing more than 60 foreign countries. Fifty percent of students are male and 50 percent female. Eleven percent are from Maine, 52 percent from New England, 42 percent from other states and territories, and six percent are international students. Minority students number more than 10 percent of the student population. Faculty: Colby employs approximately 200 faculty members who teach in 25 departments and 11 programs in continuing or tenure-track positions. There is a 10 to 1 student to faculty ratio. Ninety-nine percent of tenured or tenure-track faculty have a Ph.D. or a terminal degree in their area of study. Financial Aid:Two-thirds of Colby's students receive aid through loans, grants, and work study. All students determined to have financial need have their need fully met. Housing:More than 94% of students live on campus in 31 residence halls that range in size from 30 to 200 people. Colby has no fraternities or sororities. Economic Impact Colby employs more than 600 employees including faculty, administrators, and staff. The College's $88.5 million budget for the 2001-02 fiscal year translates into an economic impact of more than $265 million a year on Central Maine. Colby has instituted a one-million-dollar downtown loan program to help establish new enterprises as well as to support current businesses. The formation of the Waterville Regional Arts and Community Center, a not-for-profit organization that leases space to other non-profit groups, was initiated by Colby. Grants to Colby from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have enabled the college to contribute more than $500,000 to the four area school systems. In the last four years, Colby has donated approximately 700 computers (with an approximate value of $100,000) to public and private schools in the community. Science equipment is donated to local public schools by the Colby Partnership for Science Education. |
