More at www.colby.edu/museum

Founded in 1959 and now the museum with the largest exhibition space in Maine, the Colby College Museum of Art has built a permanent collection that specializes in American art. The museum includes other treasures, from ancient Asian ceramics to works by Rembrandt, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso as well as by Andrew Wyeth, Chuck Close, Richard Serra, Fairfield Copley, and Louise Nevelson. The collection includes 18th-century American portrait artists, the American Heritage Collection of primitive paintings, watercolors and drawings, and the Jetté Collection of American Painters of the Impressionist Period.

Art Museum

Admission, gallery talks, lectures, and receptions are open to the public free of charge.

The Lunder Wing presents 13 galleries of works that trace the development of American art from the 18th to early-20th century as well as the John Marin retrospective collection.

The Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Art of Alex Katz displays a diverse collection of the artist's portraits, cut outs, prints, and cartoons. It is one of only a handful of museum wings dedicated to the work of a living artist.

The Joan Whitney Payson Collection is exhibited for one semester every two years and features French Impressionist and Post-impressionist paintings by Degas, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, and Gauguin.

The museum offers an outreach program for schoolchildren and adults. Educational tours of the museum and special exhibitions are available on weekdays for groups by appointment.

Educational tours are available to student and community groups. To arrange a tour, call 207-872-3228 or e-mail museum@colby.edu.

For information about membership to the museum's Friends of Art at Colby contact the museum at 207-872-3228. Membership benefits include discounts at the museum gift shop, invitations to all exhibit openings and art lectures, as well as a subscription to the museum newsletter.
