Pine:
the Basics
PINE
is an email program used at Colby as an alternative to Eudora. The
advantage to PINE is that it runs through Colby's UNIX server and
allows users to access their mail from wheverever they happen to
be, without having to have email installed locally. Also,
because of the way it handles attachments, Pine is IMMUNE to viruses.
To
get to PINE, you must log on to Colby0, which you do through any
terminal emulation program. At Colby, faculty and staff Macintosh
computers have the Telnet application for terminal emulation;
Windows machines have TeraTerm Pro. Students can download
Telnet for the Mac
or DOS.
There are a variety of other shareware telnet applications for Windows-
just search on "telnet" in any search engine.
The
following example uses Telnet on the Mac:
1.Launch
the Telnet application. (If you are using a Colby owned (faculty
or staff) computer, you have Telnet. If you can't find it: Mac-
go to the File menu/Find, type in "telnet." Windows- go to
Start menu/Find/type in "telnet.")
2.Mac-from
the the File menu, choose "Open Connection." Windows-from
the Connect menu choose "Remote System." The "Host/Session Name"
box should be highlighted. Disregard any text that's already in
there. If you are ON campus, enter "colby0"- that's a "zero", NOT
the letter "O":
 |
Note
to Windows users: your window will look much the same as
this, however it will say "Host name" instead of "Host/Session
Name." Also, you will have boxes for "Port" and "TermType"-
LEAVE these set to the defaults, which should be "Port:telnet"
and "TermType: vt100."
You will NOT see the "FTP Session", "Authenticate" and "Encrypt"
options. Don't worry about it.
|
If
you are OFF campus, you follow the instructions above, EXCEPT that
you must enter the full Internet name of the Colby server:
Click
"Connect." Continue with the instructions below.
Whichever
application or platform you are using, once you have launched the
terminal emulator program, you will see a logon screen where you
must enter your Colby email username and password. Type in your
username, hit Return or Enter, type in your password, hit Return
or Enter again. :
Next,
you will see the Host06 prompt. Type in "pine." Hit Return or Enter.
This will get you into Pine- for details on what to do after you
get there, proceed to Page 2.
