Uploading
files to the Colby Web Server via WS_FTP(Windows):
*NOTE:
To upload files to a Colby department directory you must get permission
to access the directory by filling out the Web Project request
form. To upload files to your Colby PERSONAL Web directory you
must first activate
it.*
Getting
WS_FTP:
If you're using a Colby-owned Windows 2000 or XP in any Colby public lab, WS_FTP is installed. Go to Start | Programs | WS_FTP | WS_FTP95LE Begin with
step #1 in the instructions below.
If
you're using your own computer you may not have WS_FTP
installed. Several programs can be downloaded from web sites and purchased for a small fee. Two that have been used by students are:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/195133.html SmartFTP 1.0
http://www.download.com/3000-2160-10018456.html
WS_FTP Home 9.0
(please note: these are links outside Colby. ITS
is not responsible for changes to external site. If you encounter a problem with it, please inform us by sending mail to the contact
address at the bottom of this page and the urls will be removed.)
After
downloading the software and installing it on your hard drive, launch
the program and proceed to Step 2 of the directions.
*Before uploading your files, make sure you have them organized
and stored in a folder and that you know the path to that folder-
for example, if you store your Web files on your D drive in a folder
called "My_Web_Files", your path would be:
D:\My_Web_Files
1.Open WS_FTP: Start/Programs/Accessories/WS_FTP
2."Session Properties" Window comes up. Info should read as follows:
Profile Name: onyx.colby.edu
Host name/address:colby0.colby.edu(that's a ZERO, not
the letter O)
Host type: UNIX/standard
USER ID: your Colby email username (ie, jqpublic)
Password: your Colby email password
Account: blank
Comment:blank
3.Click "OK"
4. Your local hard drive directory appears in the left side of the
WS_FTP window, set to the WS_FTP program files folder. The directories
you have access to on the Colby Web server appear on the right.
5.For your local directory, on the left side of the window, click
the "ChgDir"(Change Directory) button; enter the path to your Web
files.
6.To upload to your personal page directory: on the right
side of the window, scroll down the list until you see the folder
"public_html.: Double-click to open it. The path at the top will
now be "web/pers/yourname", and you can upload your files here by
following Step 8.
7.If you are uploading to a directory other than your personal page(such
as a departmental page), scroll down the right side list until you
see the name of that directory. Open it. Depending on where you
wish to place your file, you might need to open some subfolders
until you are where you want to be. This is dictated by the organizational
structure of that department's page, therefore we can't give you
more specific instructions.
You might need to create a directory- to do this, click the
"MkDir" button. To remove a directory, select it and click the RmDir
button. To delete a file, select it and click the Delete button.
If you are ready to upload files, go to Step 8.
8.Upload files by selecting them from the list on the left side,
then clicking the right-pointing arrow button in the middle of the
window.
Extras:
setting permissions and viewing invisible files:
PERMISSIONS/Error
403 :as of March 26, 2002, Colby's Web server checks newly uploaded
files against user's permissions and releases those files for public
viewing AUTOMATICALLY. There is no need to manually set file permissions-
in fact, for security reasons our server does not allow any permissions
overrides from within FTP applications. IF you upload a file and
get a 403(permissions) error, notify Keith McGlauflin at x3417,
kamcglau@colby.edu.
Viewing
invisible files-
Some
files, such as the .htaccess file used for password protection of
a directory, become invisible, even to you, after you've uploaded
them. To see these and all invisible files, enter -a in the
white box directly under the MkDir button in the Ws_FTP main
window; hit Enter key.
