Introduction to this Issue from Jackie Tanner...

Melisa, Nimda, I Love You, SirCam, Code Red, and Klez—recognize these names? They are just a few of the computer viruses that have plagued the campus this spring and many of you have personal experience with them. For Mac users most viruses are more of a nuisance than a damaging factor, however, for Windows users, these viruses can be destructive. Luckily for us, the biggest complaint about Klez was that it bogged down the network and filled our mailboxes with junk. We must take more responsibility for our assigned machines, learning how to recognize potential virus alerts and checking that virus definitions updates are enabled on personal computers.

In this newsletter, Wendy Rancourt’s article on responsible computing offers some helpful tips for users to maintain healthy computers and prevent viruses and other maladies. We should also all read Paula Krog’s message to students on preventing viruses.

Also in this issue you’ll find a list of useful websites and helpful user tips, including a reference guide written by Cora Clukey on Corporate Time, Colby’s new event calendar program. Finally, contributions from two members of the ITS community who are leaving us: student computer services coordinator Eric Fleischman offers some reflections on his time here at Colby, and Language Technology Consultant Jon Reinhardt tries to answer that vexing question ‘Does technology make our lives easier?’
