Filer is an on campus only file server for access to software. Software here is freely available to Colby faculty, staff and students via on campus license servers or on campus software that is metered on a per-user basis via the KeyServer (restricted to authenticated access). Some software may also be freeware available to any user.

File storage space is available for faculty, staff and students and is accessible by following the instructions below. File storage space is also available at the department/course level, please contact the ITS Support Center at support@colby.edu or ext. 4222 for more information. Fileserver1 replaced the “General Server” on Feb. 3, 2006.

Accessing Fileserver1 Software—Windows

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run
  • Type \\fileserver1\Software
  • Type your Colby username(Colby e-mail with @colby.edu) and your password
  • Double click the Windows folder
  • Double click the software title
    • Note: Please follow the specific installation instructions in the Read Me file
    • For instructions on mapping a network drive, click here.

 

Accessing Fileserver1 Software—Macintosh

  • On the Menu Bar choose Go > Connect to Server
  • Type smb://fileserver1/software
  • Type your Colby username (Colby e-mail with @colby.edu) and your password, when prompted
  • Double click the Macintosh folder
  • Double click the software title
    • Note: Please follow the specific installation instructions in the Read Me file

Accessing Your Personal Folder on the File Server—Windows

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run
  • Type \\filer\personal
  • Type your Colby username and password when prompted to
  • Double click the category you fall under (Student, Faculty, Admin, etc.)
    • If you are a student, you will have to double click the folder corresponding to the first letter of your Colby username
  • Find your username among the list, this is your personal folder on the file server
