Martha Stewart

Halfway through my sophmore year (after a Latin American History course which I found extremely interesting) I decided to go for the Latin American Studies major in addition to my Spanish major. It was really just a vague idea at the time: I figured I was already taking the Latin American Spanish classes so...why not? Well, that led to a semester abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina where my interest in Latin America grew even more. I had such a good experience in Argentina, in fact, that I managed to go back after graduating from Colby to teach English for six months.

Upon coming back, I spent a while trying to find a job that where I could use my Spanish in some capacity. I ended up being hired as a sales assistants for two Wall Street brokers: one Spanish and one Chilean. While a job in finance was the farthest thing from what I had imagined for myself, it's enlarged my 'world view' so to speak. I now see that many opportunities exist combining Latin America and business--not all of which involve exploiting the third world.

I'd like to use my experience at the brokerage firm to find a job more directly linked to Latin America in general, as opposed to just the handful of wealthy clients we handle. I would also very much like to spend a couple years working abroad again, if I can manage it. In my personal life? The friends I made in Buenos Aires are some of the best friends I have. We email regularly and I was lucky enough to get a week off this February to go visit (summer in February...a welcome break!!) I still find Latin America--every aspect of it--fascinating, and I owe so much of that passion to my Lat. Am. classes at Colby.
