Walker Fellowship

Requirements

Colby Catalogue

Dear LAS Majors,

Please read the following information, which gives you details about the Walker fellowships sponsored by the Latin American Studies Program. These fellowships are only available to LAS majors.

Overseas Programs for Language Learning or Community Immersion

The Walker language and culture fellowship, intended primarily for sophomores, is designed to enhance language learning and cultural immersion. Depending upon demand, full or partial support for tuition, travel, and living expenses will be awarded to students to enroll in language schools abroad or to participate in community immersion programs to support their study of language and/or culture. The Latin American Studies program will sponsor Jan plan credits for participation in a reputable program in Latin America. (No Colby academic credit will be given.)

The Walker Fellowship is available for Latin American Studies majors only.
Financial need may be a consideration in selection.

Application deadline: October 14, 2009.

Please send a description of the program you would like to attend (web page download is fine); a one-page statement as to why the language program or community immersion program you are proposing will enhance your study of Latin America; a short (one paragraph is sufficient) faculty recommendation; your budget request; and an unofficial Colby transcript to Professor Ben Fallaw, Director, Latin American Studies Program, History Department. Letter of faculty support underscoring the importance of this opportunity for language and/or culture enhancement to your study of Latin America should be sent or emailed directly to Professor Ben Fallaw (bwfallaw@colby.edu).

After completing the program, students are required to send the following materials to Professor Fallaw:
a letter from the language school about student's academic performance
student's written statement about his/her personal impressions of Latin America

Senior Project Research Funds

The Walker senior project fellowship will support field research for senior Latin American Studies majors working on independent projects on Latin America. The Walker student research fellowship is designed to provide students the opportunity to take their research interests outside the classroom. Normally it would be tied to a two semester senior project. Current juniors may apply the Spring semester for summer funding before their senior year. Juniors who are considering applying for this fellowship should let us know by October 8, 2008 of their intention by submitting a brief statement explaining their research plans. Depending upon demand, the Walker fund will support international and in-country travel and living expenses. Financial need may be a consideration in selection.

Application deadline for seniors: October 8, 2008.
Application deadline for juniors: April 6, 2009.

Please send a one-page project proposal, a short (one paragraph is sufficient) faculty recommendation, your budget request; and an unofficial Colby transcript to Professor Ben Fallaw, Director, Latin American Studies Program, History Department. Letter of faculty support underscoring the importance of field work in your research project on Latin America should be sent or emailed directly to Professor Armony.

Questions? Please contact Professors Olivares, Garcia or Fallaw.
