Honorary Degree Citation for Lovejoy Fellow Arthur Hays Sulzberger

Arthur Hays Sulzberger: graduate of Columbia University, now its Trustee and Chairman of its Bicentennial Celebration, director of many enterprises, member of the Board of the Rockefeller Foundation and of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as president and publisher since 1935 of the New York Times you have made the world's most influential newspaper an instrument for the expression of your faith in the Bill of Rights and your conviction that freedom of speech requires a responsible press. A man of action as well as words, you have not allowed the threats of opponents to deter you and with skill and courage you have defended "man's right to knowledge and the free use thereof" in such a way as to earn the lasting gratitude of lovers of liberty.

By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College, alma mater of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, I confer upon you, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of your membership in this society of scholars, to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you entitled.
