Manual Open and Force quit on a Mac OSX
OS X - To Open With
A file without an assigned running application will not have a file extension (.doc, .jpeg etc), and will appear on the desktop as a blank page icon.
- To open such a file, you can press Control and click on the file, select Open With, and from the menu that appears, select the application with which you want to open the file.

- More efficiently, you can do an Open With by simply dragging the file over the desired application icon in the dock, or in the Applications folder.
To force quit a program
To force quit an application that is not responding on a Mac you can do 1 of 2 things:
- Click and hold on the icon for the application in the dock for a few seconds until a menu appears with the option to force quit the application.
- Press the Option, Command (which has the apple icon on it), and Esc at the same time. This will bring up a Force quit application menu, allowing you to choose which application you want to quit.
If neither of these options works, you can press and hold the power button of the computer to shut down and restart.
To force eject a stuck CD or DVD in Mac OS X
If you have tried all the methods such as dragging the CD icon to the trash can, or press the eject button on the keyboard. None of them worked. Please try ONE of the following solutions.
- Start Itunes, go to "Control"--"Eject Disc"
- Shut down the computer and start up while holding down the mouse button. Keep your finger on the mouse button until the disc comes out.
- If you are using the older version of the Mac, it might have a small hole right next to the CD-Rom, use a paperclip's tip to poke the hole and eject the CD manually.
