Convert Audio Cassette to Digital File (AIFF)
Sound Studio is a very powerful audio editing tool used for voice recording or transferring audio from analog audio cassettes to a digital format.

Begin by replacing the 3.5mm mini plug that goes to the regular microphone we use for voice recording with a mini-to-composite patch cable (Zach has these, available on request). Composite stereo audio plugs into the patch cable. Flip the little black switch toward the jack with the little microphone icon in the iMic (for voice recording, we normally switch it the opposite way).

Load Sound Studio and select "File/New" to create a new audio file. It is best to keep the standard settings of 44.1oo kHz, 16-bit sample size and stereo input.

Select "Window/Show Input Levels" if levels screen is absent. If desired, select "Soft Play-Through" to hear audio while recording.

Press play on the audio cassette deck. The input level screen should now show activity. If this is not the case (or if "Soft Play-Through" is selected and you hear no sound), go to "Audio/Sound Input/Output Setup." The input device should be set to "iMic USB audio system > iMic USB audio" and output to "Mac OS X Audio HAL." Hit OK.

Levels should not exceed 6dB. Slide the blue scroll arrows left or right to decrease or increase input, respectively.

To capture the audio, press the "Record" button. A red bar should now scroll across the screen but no waves will appear. Hit "Stop" when the audio has finished or you wish to end recording the selection. Waves will now appear on the screen.

Segments of audio can now be selected (click and drag over the waves) and altered using the variety of tools Sound Studio offers.

"File/Save" when finished.
