Colby offers private music instruction to students at all levels. Students and applied faculty work together to perfect technique, discuss performance practice, and refine aesthetic details, a collaboration that brings to life the history and theory of the classroom. Our applied music faculty, all professional performers and committed teachers, offer lessons on most band and orchestral instruments, and in guitar, piano, voice, and African drums.

Lessons are scheduled weekly for either an hour or half hour, and are offered both with and without academic credit. (Students electing applied music for credit must complete a college-level music theory course and play a jury).

Lessons for music majors in good standing are subsidized by the College; the fee (2006-07) for non-majors is $250 per semester for half-hour lessons and $500 for hour lessons. Some scholarships for music study are available to students with financial need. Lessons are also available during the January short term (JanPlan).
