overview
Welcome to the Colby Department
of Music web site!
Colby has a very active and welcoming music department where students work closely with a faculty made up of
outstanding performers, composers, conductors, theorists, and scholars. The department combines outstanding
academic instruction in a liberal arts setting
with a variety of performing opportunities.
The eight
faculty
and twenty instructors
in instruments and voice offer courses
ranging from music history and theory to musicianship, performance, conducting,
composition (including computer-generated and electronic composition, as
well as film music), world music, jazz history, American popular music, and
African drumming.
Colby's instrumental
and vocal instructors include some of the most respected
teacher-performers in New England. Our artists-in-residence (2007-08, Aditya Verma, sarod)
regularly coach students and perform on campus,
and the Music at Colby series brings artists of national stature
to campus for concerts and master classes.
The department sponsors
more than forty concerts each year, and students appear regularly in recitals and as soloists with
departmental ensembles
including the African drumming ensemble, Colby College Chorale, Collegium, Jazz band, Orchestra,
and Wind Ensemble.
