Troubleshooting Streaming Audio

1. Be sure you have the latest version of Quicktime® Player.

  • Click here to download versions for Mac or Windows. The installation process should automatically install the plug-in for your browser. With Windows, you may need administrator privileges on your machine in order to do this.

2. Try This Fix on Windows Versions:

  • Open Quicktime Player.
  • Select QucikTime menus/Preferences (In some versions Edit menu/Preferences)
  • Select the Streaming Protocol pulldown.
  • If "Automatically determine the best protocol and port ID" is checked: click the "Use this protocol and port ID:"and then recheck "Automatically determine the best protocol and port ID"
  • If "Automatically determine the best protocol and port ID" is unchecked: click the "Automatically determine the best protocol and port ID" button.
  • Close the QuickTime Settings window, restart your browser, and test your streaming connection.

3. Try this next:

  • If you are an MS Explorer user, try using Netscape or another browser (and vice versa)

4. If you get the "connection failed" error

  • Windows users may need to edit streaming transport preferences. Click here for a link that will show the proper configuration. Restart your browser and test your streaming connection. (If this fails, reset the streaming transport to select automatically.)

5. Check your installation of Quicktime

  • Click here to check your Intallation of Quicktime.
  • Follow the instructions; Internet Explorer Users may be prompted to download the ActiveX Control

6. Problems Caused by Firewalls

  • Using the preferences menu choose "Streaming Transport".
  • When the settings dialog box comes up, choose "Streaming Transport" then choose "Use HTTP" and "Port 80".
  • Close the settings dialog box, and quit and restart your browser.

7. Last Resorts for Windows Users

  • Click here for Troubleshooting suggestions from Apple (for Windows conflicts and compatibility problems)
  • Make sure your helper application for QuickTime movies is set. In Netscape , go to Edit-Preferences. In the Navigator section, choose Applications. In the Applications window, scroll down and be sure that QuickTime is listed. If it is not, and you know the plug-in is installed, choose New Type.
