Amos Libby began his study of North Indian tabla with the late Ustad Mulazim Hussain in Brooklyn, NY in 1996 and has studied classical Indian percussion as a disciple of Vidwan M. Vasudeva Rao of Bangalore for over 15 years. Amos continues to travel India regularly to continue his study and teaches tabla as a member of the Applied Music Faculty at Bates College. Amos began his study of Middle Eastern music and oud technique with the late oud master and composer Udi Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian. Amos has traveled to Turkey several times to study Ottoman classical and Turkish contemporary art music with Istanbul Conservatory veteran and oud and yayli tanbur master Osman Nuri Ozpekel, and has also studied in Istanbul with renowned oud virtuoso Necati Celik. Amos also studied with Lebanese oud master Charbel Rouhana at Simon Shaheen’s Arabic Music Retreat at Mount Holyoke College and traveled to Rabat, Morocco to study Arabic language at Qalam Wa Lawh Center for Arabic Studies and to study the oud with Ustaadh Yusuf Madani of the Moroccan Conservatoire Nationale. Amos is a graduate of Middlebury Arabic Language School as a Kathryn Davis Fellow and is fluent in Modern Standard Arabic. Amos is the co-director of the Bowdoin College Middle Eastern Ensemble, teaches oud as a member of the Applied Music Faculty at Bates College, and is an adjunct instructor of oud at Bowdoin College.
