On Monday, April 1, art historian Walter S. Gibson will present a slide show lecture titled “Bruegel and the Art of Laughter” at Colby College in Waterville. The lecture will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center.
In addition to many articles in scholarly journals, Gibson has written some of the leading books on Early Netherlandish painters, including monographs on Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Bruegel. Gibson’s other published works include Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Two Studies (1993) and Mirror of the Earth: The World Landscape in Flemish Painting of the Sixteenth Century (1989).
Gibson is professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University, where he taught for more than 30 years. Before retiring in 1997, he held the Andrew W. Mellon Professorship of the Humanities. Gibson has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1978.
