Desiree Shayer ’12 and Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies David
Freidenreich will give a talk about Jews in higher education in the
early 20th century at the Association for Jewish Studies conference Dec.
19-21.

The presentation, titled A Tale of Two Colleges: Jews and Baptist Institutions in Maine During the Interwar Years, looks at Colby and Bates during the period between the end of the First World War and the start of World War II. In an era when many American colleges placed restrictions on Jewish admission, Colby did not. This talk explores the policies implemented by Colby and Bates as well as the significant and often surprising impact these policies had on the Jewish communities of Waterville and Lewiston-Auburn.

Freidenreich and Shayer will present the same talk at Colby on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m. in the Robinson Room of Miller Library.
