At a community gathering of remembrance for Derrik Flahive ’13 Nov. 17, friends and teachers spoke of his “infectious smile” and adventurous spirit. Flahive was studying abroad in Chile when he died Nov. 15. [See Morning Sentinel story about the memorial.]

A more formal observance will take place on Saturday, December 3, at 11 a.m., in Lorimer Chapel.

Flahive, a global studies major, a varsity lacrosse player, and a mentor in the Colby Cares About Kids program, was a highly regarded member of the campus community, students say.

“I know that all of us send our profound sympathies to Derrik’s family and to his friends—here at Colby and beyond—in their time of unimaginable grief,” President Bro Adams told the Morning Sentinel.

For those wishing to make charitable donations in Derrik’s honor, his family has selected the charity Sin Represas! (No Dams!), an organization dedicated to protecting the wild rivers of Chilean Patagonia, which Derrik loved, from an international energy company’s plans to build five massive hydroelectric dams in the region.
