Media coverage leading up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi reinforced stereotypes and negative images about Russia, Ekaterina Sivyakova, a professor at Moscow State University, said in an address to Colby students Feb. 10. According to Sivyakova, the negative story lines prior to the Olympics detracted from the actual purpose of the games. She believes that by the end of the Sochi Olympics, the world will have a more accurate, informed view of Russia.
