Many businesses and nonprofits in midcoast Maine have been gifted artwork of Bernard “Blackie” Langlais, known for his large, often humorous sculptures. Colby received several of his works from his wife, Helen Friend Langlais, in the ’80s after his death, and the entire Langlais estate was willed to the College upon Helen Langlais’s death, in 2010. In 2012 Colby transferred about 2,900 pieces of Langlais’s work, including the artist’s former residence and 90-acre property in Cushing, to the Kohler Foundation, with the agreement that Kohler would conserve the pieces and preserve the property.
