Assistant Professor of Theater and Dance Todd Coulter recently published the article “Paul Taylor’s Meticulous Musicality: A Choreomusical Investigation” in the journal Dance Chronicle. One of the foremost choreographers of the 20th century, Paul Taylor embraces American folk music and baroque composers as he creates movement that works through the expected meter and phrasing of the music. In his article, Coulter concentrates on moments in “Big Bertha” (1970) and “Esplanade (1975) to argue that musical and choreographic phrases are often at odds in Taylor’s dances, creating intricate and engaging work that has expanded the scope and significance of American dance.
