Margaret McFadden (American studies), Colby’s Christian A. Johnson Associate Professor of Integrative Liberal Learning, published a book in February on the TV series The L Word, which debuted on Showtime 10 years ago. The book is part of the Wayne State University TV Milestones Series, which is in turn part of the university’s Contemporary Approaches to Film and Media Series.

In 130 pages The L Word discusses representation and misrepresentation of lesbians in popular media, the show’s complicitous critique of Hollywood, and lesbian cultures and communities. McFadden will teach a Jan Plan course on The L Word and its place in American popular culture in January 2015.
