When David A. Greene was inaugurated in September, he became the 20th president of Colby College—and the third college president in his immediate family. His brother Thomas Greene founded Vermont College of Fine Arts and presides at that institution, and their father, Richard Greene, was president of St. Thomas University in Miami and Goddard College in Vermont before he retired, the Boston Globe reported Oct. 12.

Patriarch Richard Greene told the Globe he never pushed any of his seven children to go into education, “and certainly not to be a president.” Rather, he and his wife, Dolores, taught them to be independent, emphasized the importance of education, and instilled in them the drive to succeed.

David Greene told the Globe that in his family, “There was a goal of always making something better. That was always very powerful.” Now both he and his brother say they intend to make their respective colleges the best—not just within a state or division, but among all of their peers. “If we’re not shooting to be the best, what are we shooting for?” David Greene said.
