Hardy Girls Healthy Women (HGHW), a nonprofit focused on improving the health and well-being of girls and women, is taking a different approach to Halloween. HGHW wants to remove pressure on young girls to wear sexy costumes and instead focus on the creativity that is possible at Halloween—a day when revelers can be anyone or anything. Professor of Education Lyn Mikel Brown, a cofounder of HGHW, shares tips on crafting a creative costume with your child.

The organization will host an event in Portland’s Deering Oaks Park on Oct. 25 and the 6th annual Freaky 5K and a kids’ fun run at Colby Oct. 26.
