In a Portland Press Herald article on a rare Kavanaugh apple tree in Freeport, Maine, John Bunker ’72, one of the state’s leading pomologists, invited readers who thought they might have a rare tree to send him apples and photos. Bunker was also present at Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) Great Maine Apple Day, where people lined up for him to help identify apples they’d gathered, including some from Colby’s Perkins Arboreteum. Bunker hopes to get permission from Colby to bring back many of the arboretum’s rare apple trees.
