Plans are underway to promote and develop the trails at Coburn Woods, a 336-acre nature conservancy in Skowhegan, Maine, donated in 1927 to the Somerset Woods Trustees by land trust founder Louise Coburn, Class of 1877 and Colby’s second female student, and her family.

Plans include new parking areas at entrances to the woods and the eventual expansion of a three-mile trail system in hopes of getting more people to use the trails, which are open to the public for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

“We’re really excited about these trails because I think they’re finally coming into what Louise Coburn envisioned for Skowhegan, to have the land be public for the use of Skowhegan residents but always preserved,” said Nina Pleasants, executive director of the Somerset Woods Trustees.
