New York Times investigative reporter and 2014 Lovejoy Award recipient James Risen was called to the witness stand Monday, Jan. 5, in Alexandria, Va., after losing a seven-year legal battle against the government’s attempts to subpoena him. Matt Apuzzo ’00, a colleague of Risen’s who is covering the case, was in the courtroom during the trial and published an article headlined “Defiant on Witness Stand, Times Reporter Says Little.” In a guest appearance on Democracy Now!, Apuzzo comments on the projected future of the case and the potential impact on the trial of former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling, whom the Department of Justice has accused of giving Risen classified information on a failed CIA operation.
