This week the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released two reports on climate engineering coauthored by Professor of Science, Technology, and Society James Fleming. In this Slate article, coauthor Raymond Pierrehumbert—who is the Louis Block Professor in Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago and the King Carl XVI Gustaf Chairman in Environmental Science at Stockholms Universitet—states that the proposals he and Fleming evaluate are “wildly, utterly, howlingly barking mad.” Pierrehumbert primarily explores the concept of albedo modification, which aims to increase the proportion of sunlight reflected back to space. Fleming has called such modification “untested and untestable, and dangerous beyond belief.”
