Ben Rooney ’10 is pioneering the rice-farming industry in Maine. He notes that Maine’s environment is ideal for growing rice, as it is replete with abandoned cranberry bogs and other wet areas. Rooney has been experimenting with rice-farming methods at his Wild Folk Farm in Benton, Maine, letting birds and frogs naturally fertilize the clay soil and utilizing the space between rice paddies to grow other things, including hazelnuts. Although Rooney has mostly produced seed rice for other farmers, he hopes to make a machine this summer that will produce rice fit to sell and cook.
