Letter from President David Greene to Colby community members, Friday, May 29, 2015
I write with the very sad news that Jeff Coombs, associate director of security, died this morning at his home. Jeff was a visible presence on campus and an important support to many in our community. He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Jeff came to Colby in 1997 as a temporary worker in PPD and, since 2000, was a member of the security staff. In the Department of Security he was promoted four times, from dispatcher to officer to assistant director and, in 2013, to associate director. Jeff was also a reserve officer in the Oakland Police Department. He was highly regarded by many students, faculty, and staff. At reunions, alumni often asked for and about him.
We are all affected by the loss of a community member. I hope you will find ways to support each other and make use of the College’s resources, including the Employee Assistance Program. Human Resources will send more information about that shortly.
We will share details about a service and other opportunities to memorialize Jeff when we receive them. In the meantime, I hope you will continue to care for each other in the ways this community does so well.
David A. Greene
