The Maine Humanities Council (MHC) has awarded Maine poet Gary Lawless ’73 with the 2017 Constance H. Carlson Public Humanities Prize. Lawless, who owns and operates Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick, “has long encouraged others to find their voice with poetry, working with veterans groups, immigrant communities, and more,” a press release from the council said. Lawless has been an artist in residence at several institutions and works with Spindleworks, a nonprofit arts center for children and adults with disabilities. “Gary’s work in the community is a spectacular example of how poetry can make a meaningful difference in the lives of Mainers from all backgrounds,” said Hayden Anderson, MHC executive director.
