Fleming was published in the January 2017 issue of Physics TodayFleming traces Rossby’s career from its start at the Bergen School of Meteorology through the establishment of Stockholm’s International Meteorological Institute and to his involvement in the International Geophysical Year (1957–58). “His schools of thought at MIT, Chicago, and Stockholm developed new mathematical techniques for data assimilation, analysis, and forecasting,” Fleming writes.
