Neil Gross, Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology, was quoted in an article titled “Most Republicans Think Colleges Are Bad for the Country. Why?” The July 10 Chronicle of Higher Education article reports that, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center, 58 percent of “Republicans and right-leaning independents think higher education has a negative effect on the country.” Since higher education is “not a big part of an average person’s life,” poll answers are not coming from personal experience, Gross said. “People are essentially taking cues from party leaders and conservative media,” he said, “about opinions they are supposed to have.”
