Elizabeth Leonard, the John J. and Cornelia V. Gibson Professor of History, was quoted in a July 27 Washington Post article titled “A history lesson for Trump: Transgender soldiers served in the Civil War.” “They wouldn’t know what in the world you meant by the word transgender, but there have women serving in men’s dress in armies since the beginning of wars,” Leonard told the Post. “It’s a story that we keep losing sight of.”
