Sparkling new playing fields will greet returning Colby students in September.

These state-of-the-art fields (located adjacent to the Alfond Athletic Center) include the Bill Alfond Field (lighted artificial turf), a competition grass field, and an oversized natural grass practice field. Spectator areas on adjacent berms and new lighting will enhance the fields, ready for play Aug. 29 and Mules home games this fall.

Colby’s winning rugby squads will also have a new surface to play on this fall. The new pitch—including new goals, scoreboard, and regulation-size surface—is under construction adjacent to the Perkins Arboretum and will welcome Colby ruggers Sept. 1.

Meanwhile, earth moving begins this week on the initial phase of the new athletic complex. Consigli Construction will mobilize Aug. 1, beginning with construction of a fence around the perimeter of the construction area.

The 350,000-square-foot facility, located across from Johnson Pond, is slated to open in fall 2020 and will include an Olympic-size pool, a multi-level fitness center, and an indoor atrium to provide natural lighting throughout the building.

The early work this summer supports facility and site construction founded on an environmentally sensitive design. This includes a compact footprint, renewable energy, ecosystem-sensitive landscape with native plantings, and wetland conservation.
