Volcano Expedition

Volcanologist and National Geographic Explorer Stephanie Grocke ’09 participated in a month-long expedition to Xela, Guatemala, to study the active Santiaguito volcano there. Grocke collaborated with two other explorers to create a “multimedia outreach campaign that will highlight the risks associated with living near an active lava dome,” and includes an online photo exhibit. Grocke, a geology major at Colby and now a U.S. Fulbright-NSF Arctic Research Scholar with a Ph.D. in geology from Oregon State University, has “conducted research on volcanoes in the Central Andes of South America, Iceland, and Central America. Currently, [she] is interested in bridging the gap between scientists studying active volcanoes and the people that live around them,” according to her bio on the project’s home page.
