President David A. Greene penned an op-ed titled “Finding the essence of home in Waterville” in the Sept. 2 Morning Sentinel. In it, Greene recounts a recent trip to Tipperary, Ireland, for the funeral and burial of his young nephew. Struck by the community’s support of his family, Greene noted that the villagers were “focused on our commonalities, the thin threads that bind us together in our collective humanity.” Greene sees Waterville similarly, as “a welcoming, accepting, loving community,” and as the Bill & Joan Alfond Main Street Commons opens downtown, Greene wants its residents to “experience Waterville in the same way we did when we moved to this special place. I want them to appreciate Waterville’s fascinating history and have the opportunity to learn from those who have long called this city home.”
