Professor of English and Creative Writing Michael Burked penned a light-hearted essay that appeared in the Appalachian Mountain Club Outdoors magazine. Titled “A Maine River Guide Reflects on Taking His Grown Kids Paddling,” the essay recounts the author’s feelings at giving his children instructions before rafting a stretch of the Kennebec River in western Maine. “My charges turned to look at me attentively, with more concentration than they’d ever given me as kids,” Burke wrote. “Strange to have your children listen as though your words matter.”
