"Global Perspectives on Women in Postcolonial Societies" Conference April 28

Colby College will be host of the conference "Global Perspectives on Women in Postcolonial Societies" Saturday, April 28, on the Waterville campus. The conference is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant to study women in Francophone Africa and the Caribbean. The conference will include participation and presentations by students and faculty members from Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges and the University of Maine. In addition to several panel discussions and research presentations, two lectures will be open to the public free of charge.

At 9 a.m. in room 100 of Lovejoy Building, Anouar Majid, associate professor in the humanities at the University of New England, will present "Women's Freedom in Muslim Spaces." Majid, a native of Morocco, is the author of Unveiling Traditions: Postcolonial Islam in a Polycentric World and the novel Si Yussef.

At 12:45 p.m. in the Smith-Robins-Hurd rooms of Roberts Building A. Widney Brown, lawyer and advocacy director of women’s rights at Human Rights Watch, will present the keynote address, "State Responses to Violence Against Women." Brown travels globally doing research and advocacy on human rights violations against women in armed conflict, incarcerated women, refugee women, forced prostitution and on persecution based on gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Brown was legal director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. Human Rights Watch is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.
