Comedic "Rudens" Performed at Colby, April 26-28

The Department of Theater and Dance at Colby College in Waterville will present the classic romantic comedy Rudens (The Fisherman's Rope) by Titus Maccius Plautus, under the direction of Jack Axelrod, distinguished visiting guest artist in theater and dance. Performances will be held Thursday, April 26, through Saturday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Strider Theater of Runnals Performing Arts Center.

Plautus was "the most successful comic playwright of the ancient world," according to author and critic Erich Segal. Axelrod describes the Roman playwright as the Neil Simon of his day, without the one-liners. Plautus’s comedies, adapted and reworked from earlier Greek plays, have inspired farce, burlesque, vaudeville and more elevated forms of comic writing for the past 2,000 years. Using stock situations and characters, he mocks the ordinary life of his day, as well as our own foolish insistence on order and meaning.

The plot of Rudens presents the struggle of a young and innocent prostitute, Palaestra (Leah Morrison ’04), to be reunited with her father, Daemones (Greg Robinson ’02), with the help of the clever slave Trachalio (Jordan Raphael ’02).

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 4-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday of performance weeks. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets may be reserved online at www.colby.edu/theater.
