Maine Native Travis Roy to Speak at Colby, April 23 On Monday, April 23, paralysis victim and author Travis Roy will speak at Colby College in Waterville at 7 p.m. in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Roy will speak about his personal struggle and the lessons he has learned as a survivor of paralysis. The event is open to the public and free of charge. A native of Maine, Roy grew up playing ice hockey, attended Boston University on scholarship and dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player. However, Roys future was shattered 11 seconds after his first face-off in October of 1995 when he hit the rink boards and was paralyzed from the shoulders down. Since his accident Roy has written a book about his ordeal, Eleven Seconds, which was recently adapted to film. He also has established the Travis Roy Foundation, an organization dedicated to spinal cord research and providing one-on-one assistance for those with spinal cord injuries. |
