Orchestra and Chorale to Perform Opera Music May 5 & 6

On Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, the Colby Symphony Orchestra, the Colby College Chorale and the Colby-Kennebec Choral Society will perform together in "An Evening at the Opera." The concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. They are open to the public and free of charge.

The combined ensembles, under the direction of Jonathan Hallstrom, associate professor of music, will be joined by soprano Kathleen Ann Theisen and baritone Peter Allen. The program will include arias and choruses from a wide range of operas including La Boheme, Il Trovatore, The Barber of Seville, Carmen, Rigoletto, William Tell and Idomeneo.

Theisen, currently director of choral activities at The Dana School in Wellesley, Mass., has appeared with the Boston Academy of Music and as a soloist with choral groups on the East Coast and in the Midwest. She has sung in the finals of the Kosciuszko Foundation Sembrich Voice Competition and the Washington International Voice Competition. Allen has appeared as a guest soloist with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Masterworks and Acadia chorales, and the Maine Baroque Ensemble. He has played leading roles in Cosi fan Tutte, Fidelio, Boris Godunov, Die Zauberflote and La Traviata.

Maine's largest college orchestra, the Colby Symphony Orchestra includes student, faculty and community musicians. The Colby College Chorale is the college's largest singing group and features more than 70 Colby students. The Colby-Kennebec Choral Society includes Waterville-area community musicians and Colby faculty members and staff.
