Artist to Lecture at Colby April 30

Sculptor and painter Brenda Garand will present a slide show talk about her art on Monday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. in room 154 of Colby College's Bixler Art and Music Center on the Waterville campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Garand’s art has been exhibited internationally, including at New York's A.I.R. Gallery, Paris's Genier de la Bastille and Quebec's La Galerie L'Embuscade. Her works evoke connections between land, sea, indigenous peoples and Anglo-French culture in New England and Canada. Garand's most recent sculpture incorporates colorfully painted, welded steel, embossed lead sheet and cloth. Her drawings often incorporate unorthodox materials, such as roofing paper and milk, and her wall reliefs and freestanding constructions may juxtapose cloth and steel.

Garand is an assistant professor of studio art at Dartmouth College. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Ragdale Foundation, Yaddo and the Atelier Silex. Her research awards include a Fulbright grant to study Chartres Cathedral in France, a Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation grant to study the Bayeux Tapestry and Bayeux Cathedral in France, and an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation research grant. The event is sponsored by Colby's Art Department and funded by the Arts Lecture Fund.
